Chapter 6 - The Trap is Laid

-6-

The rain lashed against the reinforced glass of the Whitmore Atlantic penthouse, turning the city skyline into a blurry watercolor of gray and neon. Inside, the penthouse was silent except for the rhythmic clicking of my laptop keyboard and the soft hum of the secure server rack Richard had installed in the private study.

We had engineered a digital phantom.

Using a mirrored server routing protocol, our cyber-security team had generated a fake encrypted alert originating from the Cayman Islands offshore trust—Apex Legacy. To anyone monitoring the internal compliance networks, it looked as though the fifty-million-dollar insurance payout from Evan’s botched scheme had suddenly unfrozen and was quietly redistributing itself to an anonymous secondary beneficiary.

Arthur Pendelton’s private IP address flashed on our secondary monitor.

"He’s biting," Richard whispered from the corner of the room, leaning over the console with a pair of reading glasses perched on his nose. "He’s accessing the transfer ledger right now from his home terminal in Kensington."

"He thinks he’s cleaning up Victoria and Evan’s mess," I replied, watching the data packets stream across the screen. "Greed always makes people sloppy. Arthur spent thirty years playing the patient bureaucrat, but the moment he saw fifty million dollars sitting unattended on the table, his discipline shattered."

The encrypted file we planted contained a tracking beacon disguised as a financial verification certificate. The moment Arthur’s system downloaded and decrypted the file to authorize the final share transfer, our software would automatically log his private digital signature, timestamp the transaction, and mirror every keystroke straight to the federal prosecutor’s desk.

My phone buzzed sharply on the mahogany desk.

It was a text message from an unknown number, routed through an encrypted proxy. I picked it up and unlocked the screen.

“You should have stayed on the cliff, Madison. Some doors are better left closed, and some secrets buried deeper than snow.”

My breath hitched for a fraction of a second, but the initial wave of terror was instantly replaced by cold, sharp fury. I tapped the screen, tracing the ping back through the proxy server. The signal wasn't coming from Kensington. It wasn't coming from Arthur’s home.

It was originating from inside the private security wing of the Whitmore estate itself.

I looked up at Richard, my eyes locking onto his with urgent intensity. "Dad... we have a breach downstairs."

Richard didn't hesitate. He reached into the top drawer of his desk, pulled out a heavy, matte-black firearm, and checked the chamber with a crisp, mechanical click. "Stay here. Lock the blast doors from the console."

"No," I said, standing up firmly, smoothing my jacket over my bump. "This is my family’s legacy, and my son’s future. I’m not hiding anymore."

We moved out into the dimly lit corridor of the penthouse suite, the floorboards silent beneath our custom shoes. The storm outside rattled the French doors, masking the faint sound of booted footsteps ascending the private service staircase at the end of the hall.
