Chapter 9 - RECKONING IN THE BACK SEAT

The interior of the bulletproof Maybach smelled of expensive leather, cold rain, and the sickening scent of Julian’s designer cologne. The soft reading light overhead cast a harsh, unforgiving glare across his pale, sweating face as he stared down the barrel of the gun resting against his nose.
He blinked rapidly, his chest heaving under his wrinkled tuxedo shirt as his brain struggled to comprehend how I had beaten him to his own getaway vehicle.
"David...?" Julian whispered, his voice cracking, the polished corporate charm completely evaporated, leaving only a terrified, cornered criminal. "What... what are you doing here? Where are my guards?"
"Your guards are currently taking a very cold nap in the snow behind the loading docks," I said, my voice terrifyingly calm, steady, and devoid of the hesitant fear I had carried for the past year.
I didn't pull the trigger. The gun in my hand wasn't mine—it was a spare Glock Nora had shoved into my coat pocket before we left the control room, telling me simply to hold it with a firm grip and keep it pointed at his forehead.
The rear door of the Maybach suddenly clicked open, and Nora slipped into the vehicle beside me, pulling the heavy door shut and cutting off the howling wind outside. She didn't carry a weapon now; she simply rested her hands on her knees, her slate-gray eyes fixing on Julian with absolute, unyielding contempt.
"You..." Julian stammered, looking between Nora and me, his eyes widening in sudden, panicked realization. "You're... you're Nora Vance. The black-sheep sister. I thought you were buried in a military tribunal ten years ago."
"The military is remarkably bad at staying buried when people like you keep digging up their graves, Julian," Nora replied smoothly, her voice a low, dangerous purr.
Julian pressed his back hard against the leather seat, his hands twitching nervously in his lap. "This... this is insane. You have no legal authority! That video was a fabricated deepfake! The board of directors will sue you into the stone age! I’ll have your skin for this!"
"Keep talking, Julian," I said, leaning forward, the barrel of the gun remaining locked on his forehead. "Keep telling yourself it’s all a lie. Because while you were screaming about deepfakes on stage, the state police and the federal task force were executing simultaneous raids on your downtown offices, your offshore accounts in the Caymans, and your private storage units."
The color drained entirely from Julian’s face. He looked like a man receiving a death sentence. "The... the Caymans? How could you know about the Caymans?"
"Because Clara didn't just leave a letter in the chimney, Julian," I said, my voice tightening with a rage that had been building for twelve long months. "She left every single password, every encrypted folder, and every routing number you thought you had safely hidden away. She knew you were going to kill her. And she made sure you went down right alongside her."
A sob caught in Julian’s throat. The sophisticated tech titan, the beloved community philanthropist, the ruthless corporate killer—all of it dissolved into a pathetic, sniveling mess. He slumped forward, burying his face in his hands.
"I had to do it," Julian whimpered, his voice muffled by his palms. "She was going to ruin everything. All those years of building Hayes Logistics from a two-man shop into a multi-million-dollar empire... she was going to hand it over to the courts in a messy divorce and ruin my reputation. She left me no choice."
"She gave you a choice every single day," I said, my finger tightening slightly on the trigger guard. "And you chose murder."
Before Julian could answer, the front driver's door of the Maybach was violently yanked open.
A flashlight beam cut through the dark interior, blinding us temporarily.
"Federal agents! Nobody move!" a booming voice echoed from outside.
Heavy hands gripped the rear doors, pulling them open to reveal the flashing red and blue lights of half a dozen unmarked federal SUVs surrounding the vehicle. Leading the tactical team was Special Agent Miller from the FBI’s white-collar crime division, his badge held high, his expression grim.
"Julian Vance, you are under arrest for the murder of Clara Hayes, corporate wire fraud, and interstate racketeering," Miller announced, leaning into the back seat.
Two federal agents swarmed the vehicle, grabbing Julian by the shoulders and hauling him backward out of the luxury car. He didn't fight back. He didn't yell. He let his legs drag limply against the wet pavement as the heavy steel handcuffs snapped around his wrists with a sharp, final click that echoed off the brick walls of the Biltmore alleyway.
I watched through the open door as they shoved him into the back of an unmarked federal transport van, slamming the heavy door shut and cutting off his view of the world forever.
Nora reached over, gently taking the Glock out of my hand and sliding it back into her tactical holster.

"It's over, David," she said softly.
I sat back against the leather seat, letting out a long, shuddering breath that felt as though it had been trapped in my lungs since the day Clara died. The house of cards had finally collapsed.
