Chapter 11 - The Unseen Watcher11

The black sedan had been parked down the block near the corner of Elmwood and Maple for nearly three hours.
From my seat at the kitchen island where I was reviewing budget spreadsheets for the upcoming freight quarter, I casually glanced out the window and noticed the dull glint of sunlight reflecting off its tinted windshield. It was an ordinary enough sight in a quiet suburban neighborhood—delivery drivers, contractors, and visiting relatives parked along the curb all the time.
Yet something about the car’s stationary persistence made my instincts tingle. It had been sitting there since 10:00 AM, its engine idling intermittently, casting faint puffs of gray exhaust into the crisp spring air.
I shook my head, convincing myself I was just being overly paranoid in the wake of everything our family had been through. The court date was next week; the nightmare was ending. Why would anyone be watching us?
An hour later, Hannah walked into the kitchen carrying a smiling, babbling Owen on her hip.
“Ethan, we need more diapers and organic fruit puree before the weekend,” Hannah said, setting Owen down in his high chair with a plastic rattle. “Do you want to run to the grocery store together after lunch, or should I take him while you finish your reports?”
“I’ll run out and grab everything in about twenty minutes,” I replied, standing up to kiss the top of Owen’s head. As I leaned over, my eyes drifted back out the kitchen window toward the street corner.
The black sedan was gone.
An empty patch of asphalt where the car had been parked for three hours was the only remaining sign. A strange, cold shiver rippled down my spine, but I brushed it aside, turning back to my laptop.

What I didn't know—what none of us knew—was that the car hadn't left because its driver was giving up. It had simply relocated to a better vantage point behind our backyard privacy fence.
And sitting inside that tinted vehicle, clutching a battered photo album filled with old pictures of Courtney, Derek, and Patricia, was a man whose connection to my mother’s hidden past was about to detonate our peaceful world all over again.
