Chapter 6 - THE MORNING RAID

-1

The first golden rays of dawn were cutting through the heavy Manhattan smog, painting the skyscrapers of Wall Street in sharp, uncompromising strokes of amber and slate.

I sat in the sleek leather passenger seat of Marcus Vance’s black town car parked across the street from Apex Solutions, nursing a cardboard cup of bitter black coffee while watching the entrance of the building through the tinted windshield.

Marcus sat beside me, tapping away furiously on his encrypted laptop, his eyes darting across a complex cascade of federal subpoena tracking numbers and real-time NYPD dispatch logs.

“The U.S. Attorney’s office just signed off on the emergency RICO warrants,” Marcus announced without looking up from his screen, a razor-sharp grin spreading across his face. “Thanks to the data dump you pulled from Daniel’s hard drive last night, we’ve got absolute, irrefutable proof of money laundering, corporate identity theft, and shell company mortgage layering tied directly to Viktor Sterling’s primary syndicate accounts.”

“And Daniel?” I asked quietly, keeping my eyes fixed on the glass revolving doors of the corporate lobby.

“Federal marshals and an NYPD tactical unit are walking through the front lobby as we speak,” Marcus replied, snapping his laptop shut with a satisfying click. “They’re executing a simultaneous raid on his office, his downtown hotel suite, and the secondary stash house in Queens where Sterling’s accountants operate. Your husband is about to experience a very rude awakening.”

Right on cue, the glass revolving doors of the building burst open.

A swarm of federal agents in tactical windbreakers marked FBI - FINANCIAL CRIMES UNIT poured out onto the sidewalk, surrounding a handcuffed, disheveled figure whose head was ducked low beneath a heavy blue windbreaker pulled over his face.

Even with the jacket obscuring his features, I recognized the slumped shoulders, the expensive bespoke suit trousers, and the panic-stricken stumble of Daniel Weston as he was shoved roughly into the back of an unmarked federal transport van.

Beside him, two more agents escorted a flustered, screaming Lorraine Weston—who had evidently been caught hiding out at Daniel’s temporary hotel suite—her lacquered blonde hair undone, screeching obscenities at the cameras as flashbulbs exploded across the pavement.

“You can’t do this! My son is a legitimate businessman! You’re destroying an innocent family!” Lorraine shrieked, her voice carrying across the avenue before the van doors slammed shut, cutting off her hysterical tirade.

I took a slow, deliberate sip of my coffee, feeling the warm liquid settle into my chest. The chaos, the betrayal, the stolen apartment, the forged signatures—all of it was finally being washed away by the relentless, unyielding tide of federal law.

Marcus turned to me, offering a respectful, approving nod. “Well, Claire. The first phase of operation Clean Slate is complete. Ready for phase two?”

“What’s phase two?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Evicting the squatter,” Marcus grinned, putting the town car in gear. “Let’s go take back your apartment.”
