Chapter 12 - The Scent of Lavender-12

"The loop is permanently broken, Claire," her mother said, walking down the porch steps and handing her a cold glass of fresh sweet tea—the exact same drink that had been running at the kitchen sink months ago, but today, the glass was perfectly stable, reflecting the brilliant crimson light of the valley sky.

"It is, Mom," Claire whispered, taking a slow, sweet sip of the drink, my chest filling with a deep, transcendent lightness that I hadn't felt in fourteen long months.

She wore a simple white linen blouse and slacks, her hair pulled back into that same flawless look she had loved since the recovery. She had a small, handmade cardboard medal pinned proudly to her pocket—a token her neighbors had created for our weekend block party, bearing a simple, childish drawing of a massive kitchen island counter surrounded by an infinite yellow sun that filled the entire page.

She stepped up to the rocking chair, her mother's arms wrapping securely around her neck, her grip warm, tight, and filled with an absolute, unbreakable trust that told her our family was completely safe from the ghosts of the past.

Beside them, Agent Harris stood up from her chair, her hand resting flat against Claire’s shoulder, her hazel eyes looking out over the winding ribbons of the Silver River where the mountain ridges were shining brighter than ever under the starlight.

"Happy new beginning, Claire," Harris smiled, her sweet, clear voice ringing out across the quiet valley like a holy bell. "We checked the yard, we checked the kitchen, and we checked the ridge... and I promise you, Claire, there’s not a single dark closet left anywhere on this mountain."

Claire leaned back in her chair, holding her mother close against her chest, her eyes looking out over the winding ribbons of the valley rivers below as the night began to fall. The old ledger was closed. The concrete secrets were all exposed. And as the beautiful, infinite horizon of the valley sun finally dipped behind the mountain ridges, leaving nothing but a canopy of bright, shimmering stars above, she knew with a profound and absolute certainty... that her family and she were finally, unconditionally free.
